BACKGROUND Jason's Room is an innovative response to a brief to design a small free standing guestroom (pop-up hostel) measuring 2.5 meters cubed. The guestroom was to provide affordable accommodation for visitors to the 2017 IMM exhibition in Cologne Germany. The location of the room, in the actual exhibition halls, presented the design consideration of people living in a public space, to allow for privacy this design features no windows at eye height. CONTRIBUTION The key innovation in this design is how light and air infuse the space using ceiling height openings, two sliding roof panel and the carefully considered and calculated placement of mirror strips to create a dynamic play of light, oblique views, optical illusions and an expanded sense of space. This design becomes a prototype for other such small spaces, especially in terms of incidental phenomena of light and air and spatial relationships that expend beyond the physical realm of the room. This contributes to my ongoing design practice of exploring and designing with and for dynamic and ephemeral phenomena and spatial perception; visible and perceptual (invisible), material and immaterial. SIGNIFICANCE 12 internationally renowned architects and designers were invited to submit design proposals which were then constructed by 'Integrated Design' students at KISD design school (Cologne Germany). The pop-up hostels were exhibited as part of IMM Cologne 2017, as part of 'Interior Design Week Köln' and 'Passagen 2017' from 16 - 22 January 2017.
