RESEARCH BACKGROUND: 'Your Expansive View' was commissioned by InterfaceFlor, to mark the launch of the company's Urban Retreat carpet tile collection. Little Wonder was invited to explore and express the theme of Bark within an MDF frame measuring 2400x1200x500. Taking a cue from Marcel Duchamp's Étant donnés, we took the approach of addressing the retreat in the city through the disembodied projection of the body of the viewer into the space of the frame. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION: This project required extensive testing with scale models. Full-scale mock-ups followed. 'Your Expansive View' used carpet-manufacturing yarn to create an inner experience, housed within a monolith. This monolith, clad in what InterfaceFlor called an 'Architectural Grid' pattern, spoke to the material and geometric monotony of the contemporary city. The monolith opened, like the rotted knot of a tree, to reveal a single view hole. Peering into the view hole revealed a wintry, endless landscape. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE: This work was commissioned by pioneering company, Interface, the world's biggest designer and manufacturer of carpet tiles and a leading international exponent of sustainability. It was exhibited at Block Projects Gallery, an influential Melbourne commerical gallery with strong links with major artists and cultural institutions.
