Research background: Curator Will Foster commissioned Dr Kosloff to collaborate with another artist of her choice for this curated exhibition. A total of 6 artists were asked to do the same, resulting in 6 new collaborative projects by 12 artists. Dr Kosloff worked with conceptual artist Jessie Bullivant (RMIT alumni student) producing a series of haiku poems based upon local and international artworks that they have encountered over the years. Kosloff and Bullivant wrote and photographed these poems in the sand at various beaches in Western Australia and exhibited these images throughout Substation gallery and the Hobson's bay library. Their collaboration titled 'Artwork haiku work' explores the experiential and interpretive basis of art, as well as the historical legacy of conceptual art. This work fulfilled the curators brief to produce new and unexpected research through a dedicated process of collaboration. Research contribution: Dr Kosloff and Bullivant's haiku poems employ a traditional 5-7-5 syllable structure of three lines in length. This format expands and restricts the ways in which an artwork might be described, resulting in a highly subjective and lateral recollection of the work. This format reflects the contextual basis of art, which is neither factual nor objective. The beach setting of the images evokes a transient space, where bigger contexts such as time, location, nature and escapism are brought to mind. Writing in the sand corresponds with the expressive sentiment of haiku, which often contain seasonal references. Dr Kosloff and Bullivant located their work alongside didactic panels throughout the exhibition, providing an alternative means of describing art. (continued on attached r'search s'ment doc)
