BACKGROUND: Between Time and Space attempts to embrace the spectator with an implied romantic state imagined and actual within the exchange print project EVENTIDE curated by Victorian artist/educator Rona Green. Eventide is a period of transition, when day meets night. It is an in-between space - a place of transformation. 31 Australian artists explored this theme through the exacting medium of relief printmaking. At their basis relief printmaking techniques are integrally linked to the nature of contrast. The artists in this exhibition have created a distinctive artwork contributing to a varied collection of images investigating the state of eventide. CONTRIBUTION: Between Time and Space asked how can a reproduced image focusing on relief printing address the notion of eventide? My contribution utilised the medium of linoleum cut with screen printing in an attempt to activate a sense of the romantic time of dusk or dawn that eventide represents. This artwork utilises the material of glitter on screenprinted text to heighten a sense of the magical, asking the viewer to suspend the everyday to embrace a transformative state as the folded arms of the main image illustrates. The artwork offered the novice and gallery visitor varied examples of relief printing from the portfolio to print practitioners focusing on a peer to peer exchange. SIGNIFICANCE: Curator Roan Green has a known history of inviting key Australian artists into exchange projects that address mediums and or concepts of our time. EVENTIDE has combined well known relief practitioners such as G W Bott and Euan Heng with practitioners like myself as a way of expanding the relief medium's appeal to other practitioners and the general public. Between Time and Space was presented at ERA sanctioned and nationally renowned MPRG. The exhibition and public program attracted a diverse range of gallery viewers increasing the medium's appeal and understanding. The artwork is now part of the MPRG collection.
