RESEARCH BACKGROUND: 'I'm in a Show at 200 Gertrude St.' was produced for 'Appointments', a public exhibition curated by Spiros Panigirakis for 'Sarah Scout Presents'. The work extends work Mitchell exhibited at '200 Gertrude Street' (now Gertrude Contemporary) in 1999. The 2012 work consists of two photos of the artist (1999 and 2012). The 1999 photograph is framed along with wall text taken from its exhibition at 200 Gertrude St. Accompanying these photographs is a re-enactment of the 1999 performance in which labelled clothing was worn by the artist for the duration of the exhibition. CONTRIBUTION: The work contributes to Panigirakis' examination of creative practice and the often haphazard trajectory of artist's careers. The work also explores broader concerns regarding the commercialisation of art practice and conceptual arts inability to resist market commodification. Situated within the commercial gallery Sarah Scout Presents the art becomes a commodity object. This commodification sits in contrast to the work's original intent, which when presented in 1999 sought a dematerialised relation to art. This trajectory, from conceptual art to commodity, parallels the practices of many of Mitchell's peers from the late 90s, such as that of Bianca Hester who also presented conceptual work alongside Mitchell at 200 Gertrude Street in 1999 and is represented by 'Sarah Scout Presents'. SIGNIFICANCE: The work's curation by Panigirakis continues and strengthens ties between Mitchell and Panigirakis and expands a shared dialogue centred around sustained creative practice that formed through the ARI CLUBSproject Inc. in 2003. Fiona Macdonald ('Glade I' and 'Glade II', first shown at ACCA in 1994) and Fiona Abicare ('Artist Auteur', 2010) were also shown. Sarah Scout Presents is a well-regarded private gallery (eg Spiros Panigirakis' 2010 show there was in The Age http://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/art-and-design/framing-the-natural-world-20101028-175lz.html)
