BACKGROUND: Anton James' drawing 'Martin Place Memorial 10' was selected for the exhibition 'Drawn by Design - The Art of Architecture' - a bi-annual exhibition of drawings and paintings by prominent Australian architects. The exhibition examines drawing as a critical act of thinking and design within architecture. CONTRIBUTION: The exhibition contributed to the understanding of drawing and sketching as an art that informs the realisation of architectural forms and the built environment. Drawing is central to James' design practice; it began as a means of illustrating and testing problems and their solutions, it is now increasingly becoming the way of thinking through the problem. The Martin Place drawings exhibited are part of a suite of drawings that evidence an approach to a project rather than an answer to a design problem. The presentation of drawing, to reflect a way of thinking rather than a solution, constitutes a subtle shift in his research trajectory. SIGNIFICANCE: James was one of the 33 architects from around Australia invited to participate in the exhibition at Art Atrium. Art Atrium is an art gallery in Sydney specialising in contemporary Australian and Aboriginal art and acting as an integral link between artists and the public. The exhibition was launched by Edmund Capon, AM, OBE and former director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. It was reviewed in Indesign Live magazine.
