BACKGROUND Within the expanded field of contemporary art practice, abstract painting is very much an active and expanding participant as evidenced by the serious critical review of painting, and abstraction in particular in the 2015 exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art - Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemporal World. Amongst others, New York artists such as Mary Heilmann, Thomas Nozkowski, Sol LeWitt and Robert Irwin are key practitioners and thinkers relevant to my research. My research contributes to the dialogue of abstract painting by expanding its parameters into immersive, experiential and spatial practice. CONTRIBUTION My research is an investigation into contemporary, abstract painting where I paint directly into the site - on the walls of the space. This work is a proposition for a work in the New York Studio School Gallery, NY., the space in which this exhibition took place. The research question framing this drawing is, "What are the particular spatial conditions does this site present and how can I paint a work directly into that site that engages those conditions?" SIGNIFICANCE The curator's premise for the drawing exhibition was "Reading the Space" and the work is a response to the site, abstract painting and the parameters of the engagement of painting the artwork into existence in that place. This work exposes me to an international audience, in a prestigious institution I attended for three years. The exhibition was reviewed in the online journal Hyperallergic, and the image in the article includes my work.
