Research Background This research is situated in contemporary jewellery and silversmithing. This installation is included in a larger exhibition that has been curated to look at the everyday in contemporary craft. The exhibition includes a purpose built shelf that houses jewellery and objects that suggest the everyday but are non-functional. The objects instead imply function and meanings and offer female narratives about Antarctica. Research Significance This research was presented at the Dowse in Wellington. The Dowse's holdings generally focus on New Zealand artists of both national and local significance; the Dowse houses a significant collection of jewellery and craft. The organisation champions aspirational making and ideas. Emma Ng, the Blumhardt Curatorial intern for 2013-2014, curated Everyday Fiction. The Blumhardt Foundation, Creative New Zealand and The Dowse have collaborated to create the internship providing a curator the experience of making an exhibition project focusing on the decorative arts and design. Emma Ng curated this exhibition to include works of design, decorative art and contemporary art. Research Contribution This exhibition draws together works from a diverse group of New Zealand artists and The DIY-style structures sit next to small, beautifully crafted objects, threaded together by an urge to make everyday life more thought provoking. Emma states, "I was interested in how we are always dreaming beyond the bounds of our own lives - venturing further and further in search of fresh starts and opportunities to reshape the way we live."This research has been included in this exhibition and represents Antarctica in new and innovative ways by offering objects that question and discuss the installation and encounter of jewellery and silversmithing research.
