Galaxy Garden was curated by Tokyo artist Utako Shindo and examined the role of the domestic garden in contemporary art practice that is related to environmental concerns. The group show consisted of Australian, Japanese and Swedish artists and the work exhibited was informed by both cultural and individual responses.
The work I exhibited forms part of an ongoing project which examines the role of the constructed natural environment as found in the suburban garden and how this role connects to social and cultural beliefs/behavior concerning the natural world. When creating these works i made use of visual strategies often found in science or business in order to create pseudo scientific readings that mimic data used to discuss environmental issues. This research into 'alternative' visual languages allowed me to test how viewer responses altered when they encountered the work and how this could be used to create works with more complex readings.
The exhibition was reviewed favourably in the Age on May 14, 2011 (peer review)
This work contributes to the body of knowledge related to art and the environment.
