Background: The craft, study and practice of analogue printmaking techniques has a long-standing history within the fine art field. In evolving this research through the investigation of the intersections between analogue and digital print techniques I initiated this set of works following on from the 2020 A Future Proximity folio to further investigate the differences between analogue and digital depth perception in a 2D image. The community of practice includes artist’s Tacita Dean and Christianne Baumgartner and theorist/artist Hito Steyerl. Contribution: This portfolio in progress of 5 print-based artworks explores variable depth perception of atmospheric phenomena and landscape through collage interruptions, video still image capture, screen print, pigment inkjet and watercolour, depicting in each case a meteorological storm front. Taken together, the works in this folio contribute ideas around how analogue and digital interfaces within print technologies could provide a platform for exploring the possible variations in depth perception produced in two-dimensional print-based artworks. Significance: All 5 works were shown at peer-reviewed exhibitions. The works have the same title but are different iterations in their own right. Proximity (1-4) was selected for the Impact 11 International Printmaking Conference, Hong Kong. IMPACT – International Multi-disciplinary Printmaking, Artists, Concepts and Techniques – is held every 4 years and is one of the most significant professional conferences dedicated specifically to printmaking. It was first held in 1999, by The Centre for Fine Print Research at the University of the West of England. Proximity 5 - Stratum was selected for the juried 2021 Experimental Print Prize Exhibition at the Castlemaine Art Museum which is recognised as significant regional art gallery. The exhibition showcased prominent contemporary experimental print practices.
