RESEARCH BACKGROUND: The Paul Guest Prize encourages artists from across Australia to engage with the important medium of drawing, to create challenging and unique art works, and encourages entrants to celebrate and push the boundaries of drawing. Director of Bendigo Art Gallery Karen Quinlan commented in the press release that the prize will inspire interest in the development and expression of this medium in contemporary art. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION: The work submitted aimed to extend the boundaries of drawing in contemporary art through the combination of industrial marker pens and tradditional materials, using both deliberate references to landscape and to automatic drawing techniques. It contributes to new knowledge in that aims to re-evalate contemporary abstraction as a reference point wiithin current drawing practice alongside more traditional approaches. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE: The Bendigo Art Gallery is a signficant and highly regarded regional gallery that features international exhibitions alongside national touring exhibitions, curated exhibitions and solo exhibitions by contemporary Australian artists. The inclusion of the work withing this peer reviewed exhibition, highlighted it alongside the best of contemporary drawing practice in Australia. The prize was judged by Roger Butler, Senior Curator, prints and drawings National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
