WOOF: Champion

Research Background The artwork Champion 2014 contributes to the field of identity politics and gender studies. Specifically gay male identity and masculinity as a way of addressing ongoing issues of coming out and internalised homophobia. Research Contribution Participating artists were asked to consider in their contemporary practice a response to the theme 'Speak Out". It is a completely valid proposition that all artwork speaks to us in some way and has an expressive capacity or communicative function. However, we encourage further innovation using this qualifier in spirit, content, medium or form. The research undertaken for this artwork was based on concepts of collection, archive and re-photography of found images from mainstream printmedia. The artwork addressed questions of male representation within mainstream printmedia and the homogenisation of masculine performance and representation. The re-presentation of found images through the mediums of photography and printmaking created a unique perspective using the materials of paper, ink and glitter. Champion 2014 adds another perspective to the ongoing dialogue of identity politics within gay and straight cultures. It attempts to challenge the conformist nature of our local mainstream publications through the use of re-photography and silkscreen printing. Research Significance This artwork was exhibited within a peer-reviewed annual exhibition at the Counihan Gallery in Brunswick within the City of Moreland. The work was exhibited along side 47 other art practitioners based in the Moreland City precinct. The selection panel included Gallery Curator Victor Griss, Gallery Staff and a panel member from the Moreland Arts Board. Selection Criteria was as follows: • Initial selections will be made on the basis of an image of the proposed artwork and an accompanying artist's statement. • Proposed artworks will be selected on their capacity to interpret the theme of the exhibition.
