Research Background: to hazelhurst and back [seventeen hours drawing/erasing] is a body of work that was part of the Drawn to Time exhibition, Drawing Research Group (DRG), Loughborough University, UK, curated by Susan Kemenyffy. This creative work contributes to new ways of thinking and practicing contemporary, expanded, and temporal drawing within a global temporal drawing community. Research contribution: Carey’s to hazelhurst and back [seventeen hours drawing/erasing] is an unexpected image of the detritus of sharpened pencils and erasers—accumulated after 17 hours of the recognizable act of drawing—speaks most eloquently of time’s passage. It is a visceral image that alludes to offstage actions and actors. It speaks of committed effort which is never observed. The introduction of ‘time past’—quite literally—precipitates unanticipated ‘conversations’, expanding a static definition of ’drawing’. Research significance: Drawn to Time was an open call and peer reviewed exhibition with over 370 submissions world-wide and invited submissions to the call for drawings in response to the theme of ‘temporal drawing’ suggesting that temporality is not only inherent in drawing, both as a process and as a product, but is also its fundamental condition. Carey’s inclusion in this global exhibition is of high significance, contributing to the contemporary conversation surrounding the very notion of drawing in expanded contexts.
