The Invisible Lesbian Evoked Through Creative Practice investigates how marginalisation has shaped a personal narrative and a lived life. The project deploys photo-based praxis, performance, creative writing, and sculpture to examine the complexities of my journey from being a “teenage tomboy” to an adult lesbian in working class Edinburgh during the 1980s. It explores personal and historical intersections through the articulation of a shifting identity towards awareness of gender identity and sexuality. The artistic research is informed by my lived experiences and autoethnographic methodologies, underpinned by feminist, lesbian and queer creative practices (as well as others) and theories including Sara Ahmed’s queer phenomenology. The research seeks to contribute to the visibility of lesbian and queer lived experiences in contemporary art practice.
