Tessellation: Exploring Pathways and Partitions is a research project exploring the potential variations, distortions and visual pathways inherent within the context of the ‘tessellated, geometric, modular artwork’.

The project takes the form of the creation, tessellation and documentation of an ‘ever growing set’ of stained paper, multi-hued, isosceles triangles or ‘modules’. These are tessellated together into a variety of different combinations and architectural spaces continually throughout the project.

The visual research also involves a combination of both concrete (all the triangular modules must remain the same dimensions and the goal is to create as many as possible) and intuitive practise modes (Sellbach explores and documents the aesthetic, serial choices made along the way, without attempting to explore every possible combination.) Although the project is based around a limited set of rules or guidelines, within the limitations or following of rules, a multitude of variations, visual pathways, distortions, and anomalies begin to surface.

The outcome, documented throughout the ADR/thesis is a detailed visual record of an ongoing serial geometric ‘addition and subtraction’ in a variety of different spaces, including Sutton Project Space. The ADR/thesis includes photographic record of works, notes and diagrams identifying pathways and partitions within the works, and Sellbach’s inventories, which mark the progress of the ever growing project as Sellbach looks to quantify, and collate data within the ‘ever growing set’ as the project continues.
